Adobe Captivate 9 Guide

1 min read

The requirements and recommended settings for creating SCORM content with Adobe Captivate 9+ so it plays and reports correctly in the World Manager platform.

Before you begin

Build your module however you like, but set the options below before you publish. Slide dimensions are chosen when you start a new project — use at least 1280 × 720 px.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps to adobe Captivate 9

1

Disable the Captivate auto exit action

The platform loads your SCORM module in an iframe so it can track progress continuously and let users move between SCORM and E-Learning modules. A module that exits or closes itself from within Captivate breaks that, so check two settings before publishing.

Start and End preferences Set Project End Options action to Stop Project
On Exit on the final slide Set to No Action

Add your own exit button

So users can end the module and return to the platform, include a button with its action set to Exit.

2

Set your bookmarking preference

Bookmarking lets a user save progress and come back later. Open Edit › Preferences, select Reporting then Advanced, and set Never Send Resume Data to match the behaviour you want. Click OK to save.

Edit › Preferences › Reporting › Advanced
Behaviour Setting Best for
Save progress to World Manager Never Send Resume Data unticked Longer modules, where a user may want to finish later. Saved progress is available across devices.
Always resume from the beginning Never Send Resume Data ticked Shorter modules expected to be finished in one sitting. No progress is saved.

Attention

Captivate's Self-Paced Learning bookmarking option is not compatible with modules built for any LMS.

3

Set the reporting and completion criteria

World Manager uses SCORM 1.2 to track and mark modules. Open Edit › Preferences and make sure Reporting is selected.

Setting Value
Quiz Checked — this enables reporting
LMS Other Standard LMSs

Status Representation Complete for a module without a quiz, Passed/Failed for one with a quiz

Then set Success/Completion Criteria:

Criterion How it behaves
User Access Marks the module Complete or Passed as soon as the user opens it. Ideal when the content is optional and you want users to jump straight to the E-Learning module.
Slide Views Requires a set number or percentage of slides to be viewed. Ideal for modules without questions; account for any skippable content. Can be combined with Quiz is Passed.
Quiz is passed Completion comes from the quiz. Combine with Slides Viewed if there's required content after the quiz. Set the pass mark if you use this.
4

Set the quiz pass mark

If you chose Quiz is passed, go to Edit › Preferences › Pass or Fail and set the threshold as a minimum percentage or a minimum number of points.

Watch the extremes

Setting 0 in either field marks the SCORM as passed immediately. Setting 100% — or the maximum number of points — requires every question to be answered correctly.

5

Disable playback controls (optional)

Removing playback controls creates a more controlled, linear training experience rather than letting users skip ahead. Click Project › Table of Contents, open the Playback Control section via the blue play icon, and deselect Show Playback Control.

Keeping the controls?

At the very least, deselect the Close option — it prevents users closing the SCORM in an unexpected way.

6

Publish a SCORM 1.2 package

With your module finished and the reporting settings in place, click Publish and select Publish to my Computer.

Publish › Publish to my Computer

Option What to set
Publish as HTML5/SWF
Location Where the published file is saved on your computer
Zip file Ticked — puts the published files into a zip ready to upload
Typekit Domains Only if you used Adobe Typekit fonts; type localhost
Output format SWF for Flash compatibility, HTML5 for mobile
Scalable HTML content Tick if you built at large dimensions and want it to scale to any screen
More Shortcuts to other panels — LMS settings, mobile gestures, quality
On scaling

Scalable content also scales up on larger screens, so a low-resolution project viewed on a high-res display can look pixelated and blurry.

7

Set the platform buttons on upload

Upload the published .zip into the platform. When you create or update a SCORM, you choose whether to enable the Save & Exit and Finish buttons.

Button When to enable it
Save & Exit Enable if your module saves progress to World Manager. Disable if it always resumes from the beginning, so users aren't given the impression progress is saved.
Finish Only where the module, for some reason, cannot make the LMSFinish() API call itself. It appears once completion criteria are met and sets the status to passed, failed, completed or browsed.

Note

Disabling Save & Exit does not turn off progress saving — a user can still use the browser's back button or close the tab and resume where they left off. On finish, a failed status returns the user to the page they began from showing a fail; passed, completed or browsed sends Training Template modules on to the questionnaire, while Standalone modules return to the starting page showing a pass.
